The main figure in this well and vividly populated tapestry is Lolly Ray Lasswell, the high school’s star majorette. As the daughter of trailer people, Lolly is near the bottom of Eunola’s social scale. But she is not a ‘trailer tramp’—she is the town’s vision of purest virginal sexuality at homecoming games, dazzling everyone with her gold-sequined costume and her bold twists and twirls. Eunola plans to keep her that way forever, but Lolly sets about thwarting its plans with casual determination, intent on creating her own ‘drifts and endings.’

Beverly Lowry was born in Memphis and raised in Greenville, Mississippi. She is the author of six published novels, one book of nonfiction, and numerous stories and articles. She lives in Washington, D.C., and teaches creative writing at George Mason University.
