William J. Cooper, Jr. is Boyd Professor Emeritus of History at Louisiana State University and the author of numerous books on southern history, including Jefferson Davis, American, winner of the Los Angeles Times Book Prize. His most recent book is The Lost Founding Father: John Quincy Adams and the Transformation of American Politics.
